Release the Beast

All-Players: At a recent fundraiser in NYC for CitiLAX, who is helping  bring
the game to less fortunate schools in the city,  Lacrosse deity Max Seibald
was peppered with questions by what was a typical New York crowd,
wanting answers and results on the spot.  Near the end of the session, a
parent asked, "Thank you for your advice regarding the fact that the best
thing a player can do for his game is to hit the wall. I was hoping that you
might provide us with an additional pearl of wisdom?"  Max answered: "Sure,
hit the wall."  (offhand, low, all day long)
Middies:  Dodging- When it's time to take the rock to the hopper one on
one,  start your drive as close to the center of the field, and as far from the
goal, as you can. Then, run as fast as possible, like a runaway rhino, straight
at your defender. The  key is to let your instinct take over.  (stop thinking)
Your defender will be forced to commit in one direction, and your instinct
will send you in the other.

Attack:  Change of direction from behind. Get a head of steam up from
the x, and commit hard to the right. Your d-man has to respect the hard
commit, and only you know when you are going to cut back the other
way.  It's physics to the extent that, in the moment that the D-man
commits to your move to the right, he's pretty much up in the air,
vulnerable to a cut back. The key is to prepare to shoot, low, using your
High-Ball pocket to wrap your stick around the cage and score. Next time,
fake the cut back, and score from the right.
Defense: 1. Harass/annoy check your man as much as possible when he
has the ball. You don't have to take the ball away, cuz he'll want to get rid
of it real quick after you establish your 'hornet in his helmet' without
getting a penalty presence. 2. try and take the first shot of the game, it
rattles the other team.
Offense: When dodging, it is important to avoid too much dodging.  The
key is to keep it vertical, to avoid any horizontal deviation, which slows you
down. In fact, do not even think of it as dodging, think of it as shooting
preparation.   And then don’t even think about it!  Just blow by the X guy,
and shoot the rock.  “There's a force in the universe that makes things
happen; all you have to do is get in touch with it. Stop thinking...let things
happen...and be...the ball. “  Ty Webb in Caddyshack.  If you do slow up,
run straight at an attackman’s defender, and pass the ball.
The New Ghost7 is Very Scary!
Recruits:  Of note is that 1) The Game of Admissions and Scholarships
starts early.  2) There are Golden Tickets out there.  Regarding Point #1, I
have been sending vids of 8th graders to college coaches in the last year.
Regarding Point #2, I know several High School Juniors who know, right
now, what Ivy League School they are going to in 2 years. The game starts
early,  but it can be over quickly as well.

After the videos have been compiled, the showcases attended, and the
applications tendered,  the admission process is fairly personal. Coaches
want to know that someone they might commit to is fully committed to
them.   So,  look them in the eye, and tell them: 'I want to go to your
school, and only your school."

All-Players: Lacrosse is one of the few sports on Earth where the ideal
players size might be around 5-9, 175.  Bigger (or smaller)  is fine, but
footspeed trumps size, and stickwork trumps footspeed. Yup, even Fat
Albert could have been an All-American if he'd trained himself to use a lax
stick like a nun-chuk.  (the size thing holds for defensemen too, one of the
three NCAA 1st-Team All-Americans in 2011 is 5-11, 180, and another is
5-10, 194
)
